CSAT - A level-playing field

The much-awaited Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) finally happened on June 12. CSAT, which replaced the optional paper in UPSC Prelims (Civil Services Exam) had given rise to much speculation and anxiety among students. Aspirants preparing to appear for 2012 and the subsequent years also had a keen eye on the paper. There have been reports from various centres that as many as half of the registered candidates did not turn up for the examination. But for those who actually attempted the paper, it was a pleasant surprise with most questions coming under the 'attemptable' category. There were ample questions based on common sense and generic aptitude and with reasonable preparation it would have been possible for most candidates to do well. UPSC had to walk the tight rope between bringing in relevant aspects of testing for the first time into UPSC entrance examination formats while not favouring or jeopardising any particular section of the candidates. The balance act, we have

Language of Interview at CSE of UPSC

In a relief to thousands of civil service aspirants, candidates for the Union Public Service Commission main examination can now give their personality test interview in a language different from the one they choose for the written paper. English will no longer be the mandatory medium for the interview, even if the examination is written in that language. In a nation where joining the civil services is still considered a big deal, more than 4.8 lakh students appeared for the preliminary UPSC examination this year. The results are expected around August after which the main examination is likely to be held at the year end, in which the candidates' list is expected to be whittled down to approximately 13,000. The list of vacancies would be a fraction at about 1,000 going by the 2010 figures where only the most deserving will get selected. But starting next year, the personality test interviews will be much easier and a relaxed affair. They can even give the test in their mother tongu

Give the right answers

The Civil Services Examination has been considered the toughest and most selective competitive examination since the times of the British. The numbers speak for themselves. Of about two lakh who actually appeared for the exam in 2009, only 875 could make it to the services. In recent years, the trend for the best and brightest to opt for the Civil Services has continued in spite of the lucrative private sector jobs available. The changes brought about in the examination pattern by the Union Public Service Commission will further strengthen this trend. Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) has replaced the Preliminary examination conducted every year in May as a qualifying exam for the Mains. Now all candidates have to appear for two common qualifying papers instead of an optional subject chosen from a list of 23 subjects. The Second Administrative Reforms Committee, Prof. Yoginder K. Alagh Committee and others have recommended that testing a candidate's knowledge in a particular subj

What is an Aptitude

The pattern of IAS Prelims examination has been restructured to test the aptitude of the aspirants so that problems related to mismatch in administrative mechanism can be avoided. What comes as a surprise is that most of the aspirants are not even aware of the meaning of the aptitude. The word aptitude is derived from the word Aptos which means “fit for”. Aptitude is the sum of capacity and interest of an individual. Aptitude is also the aptness or quickness to succeed in a specific field of activity. It is a present condition that is indicative of individual's potentialities for future. Your aptitude is your inherent capacity, talent or ability to do something. Aptitudes a set of characteristics symptomatic of an individual's ability to acquire with training, some specific field of knowledge, skill or set of responses. In short aptitude is latent potentialities or undeveloped capacities to acquire abilities and skills and to demonstrate achievements. {Courtesy: upscportal.com}
